Last year, JKM the Social Welfare Department announced it would be dispersing payments to welfare recipients under a cashless programme. It meant that cash aid for welfare recipients would be split into two types of payments: Half into a Bank Islam ATM card and the other in a card called JKMPay. The amount in JKMPay can only be used in selected stores registered with Bank Islam. However after the move was lambasted by NGOs & the public, JKM has clarified that only new registrations will receive the cashless welfare payments. The programme won’t include existing recipients.
