Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. counterpart Donald Trump held constructive talks on AI during their Beijing summit last week and agreed to keep up intergovernmental dialogue, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday (May 19).

As major industry players, the two should jointly promote its development and governance to better serve the progress of civilisation and the well-being of the international community, said spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a daily news conference.

Last week’s summit between the two heads of state, produced modest results by the standards of U.S.-China summits, with thin commercial results contrasting with Trump's 2017 visit to China, when companies accompanying him signed deals and memorandums of understanding valued at US$250 billion.
