Former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has the right to conduct his own assembly if he wants to, said UMNO veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, said Muhyiddin is still UMNO's number two and he could hold an assembly as long as it is in accordance with the law.
"Anyone can hold an assembly that abides by the law. Muhyiddin is still the party's deputy president, so he has the right to," said Ku Li when met after launching the 'Islam in Constitutional Democracy' forum here Saturday.
Muhyiddin had previously confirmed his attendance at the UMNO General Assembly, despite him not being allowed to deliver his winding-up speech before the delegates.
He, however, was expected to address a crowd on Dec 7 at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman in the city.
Meanwhile, Ku Li said the move to disallow Muhyiddin from officiating the meetings of the UMNO party wings at the general assembly was merely a break from tradition.
"It is the decision of the leadership, if the leadership feels that only the leaders of the wings would address the gatherings of the Wanita, Youth and Puteri, it's a breakaway from the so-called tradition."
