Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today stressed that he would not disappoint UMNO members and Malaysians.
Writing in his blog, Najib said he would fight to the end and shoulder his responsibilities to the party and people as well as continue to lead so long as the party and people supported him.
"All leaders face challenges and when we step into the ring, we do not quit in the middle of a fight, so I will not surrender, InsyaAllah (God willing). We will march forward," he said via his site NajibRazak.com today.
He said in politics, to topple a leader, there would be various conspiracies from inside and outside the country as these people wanted to bring down UMNO, the pillar of the nation's leadership and administration.
"If they want to destroy the party, obviously the leaders will be attacked. When the people begin to lose confidence in the leader, it would be easy for the party to fall anytime," he said.
At the same time, Najib urged the people to understand the political situation now and said they needed to be clear that the country was peaceful and poised for greater success because it was led by the sacred party, UMNO.
He said the people was now facing a new environment where the social media was being used to spew hatred against a leader until the deeds of the leader no longer carried any meaning.
"Today, the social media is available at the tip of a finger for us to state the truth or spread slander, unlike the past when there were no weapons to revile, slander and shame leaders except by using poison pen letters.
"So, this is the game now and coincidentally all these are happening when I am the party leader," he said.
In this regard, Najib said he was touched to see the presence and support of Barisan Nasional (BN) component colleagues at the Pekan division delegates' meeting yesterday.
Recalling his beginnings as a leader almost 40 years ago, Najib said he was determined to continue the legacy and struggle of his late father Tun Abdul Razak Hussein as a true leader from Pekan.
"When told by the party to contest in the by-election in 1976, I was stunned as I was not even 23 years old then but I asked myself whether I could take on this heavy challenge," he said.
He said he was the UMNO Youth chief when UMNO was banned in 1987.
"I could not imagine at that time what would happen to our party, but I was aware that whatever the situation, the struggle must continue. We must persevere and use our wisdom to find ways to resurrect the party which has served us well.
"Alhamdulillah, we see UMNO being more successful today," he said.
