Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will go to any extreme to bring down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said the issues that the former premier is bringing up at the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections were also nothing new.

“I think he will do anything to get PM out of power. And what he's being saying is nothing new. When he was in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, even this morning, they were all the same issue. So for me, it's a non factor,” he said.

The Defence Minister also expressed his disappointments with Dr Mahathir who has been campaigning for the Opposition in the by-elections.

On June 10, Dr Mahathir was seen campaigning in Sungai Besar for the Parti Amanah Negara candidate, Azhar Abdul Shukur.

In several ceramah, Dr Mahathir said Najib will do anything to ensure that he stays on as the Prime Minister. Thus, he called on voters to be wise in picking a candidate who can bring development.

Speaking after attending a gotong royong event organised by the Armed Forces at Kampung Bendang Kering, Kuala Kangsar today, Hishammuddin said, the Oppositions are harping on rhetoric issues which will not bring any effect to the locals.

Pulai UMNO division chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed had also labelled Dr Mahathir's decision to campaign against BN in the two by-elections as an act of deceit to UMNO and BN.

The Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-election is a four-cornered contest between Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid of Barisan Nasional, Perak PAS Women's chief Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, Kuala Kangsar Amanah vice-chief Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli and Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.

It is being held following the death of Mastura's husband, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, who was killed in a helicopter crash in Sebuyau, Sarawak, on May 5.
