Police have detained three secondary school students in Seberang Jaya near here who had been earlier expelled from their school after being found guilty of beating another student from the same school.

Penang CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said three students, all aged 15 years, were picked up from their homes around Seberang Jaya here at about 11pm last night.

"We are detaining them to take their statements to complete our investigation. They will be released as soon as the procedure is completed.

"However, if it is still insufficient, police will obtain a remand order for them, it all depends on our investigation," he said when contacted by Bernama here today.

He said so far, police had recorded the statements of eight people including the victim, the student who recorded the assault on video and a school teacher.

Mazlan said the case was being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

Yesterday, Penang Education Department director Ahmad Tarmizi Kamaruddin was quoted as saying that the department had expelled three students from a secondary school in Seberang Jaya here after they were found guilty of beating their class monitor on March 4.

The incident was believed to have started when the three Form Three students were angry with the class monitor for reporting to a teacher that they brought mobile phones to school.

Their attack on the victim was recorded and uploaded on Youtube several days ago, which has since received negative comments from viewers.
