Penang's crime index showed a slight increase this year due to more investigation papers being opened, said Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.

However, he said crime in the state was still under control and that the police would investigate and not ignore any repors made by the public even if it was just a small case.

"Reports made by the public we will not sweep under the carpet, we will investigate even its a simple report.. that's why a lot of investigation papers were opened, causing the crime index to increase to 10 per cent, particularly property crimes and violent crimes," he told a press conference, here, today.

In another development, Abdul Rahim said the state police would cooperate with the Penang branch of the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation to organise crime prevention awareness programs for the public.

He said the campaign themed 'Crime Prevention - Safe and Alert' will be held at three locations, namely, Gurney Plaza on June 16, Sunway Carnival Shopping Mall (Aug 17) and Queensbay Mall (Nov 16).
