Mara collected RM692 million in loan repayments last year

Mara collected loan repayments totalling RM692 million last year, exceeding the target of RM500 million, and targets a repayment of RM600 million this year based on the positive development.

Its director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad said, Mara's statistics also showed that the repayment for 2011 touched RM494 million, surpassing the RM400 million target set for that year.

In this regard, he said, the perception that the Malays were reluctant to settle debts, was no longer relevant.

"The fact is that Malays repay their loans," he said after a forum 'A Scroll And A fistful Of Trust' at the Putra World Trade Centre, here, today.

The one-day forum was aimed at strengthening ties between Mara and its students and provide the latest information on the role of Mara. It was opened by Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Hasan Malek.

In the meantime, Ibrahim said, local students must open up their mind by selecting studies other than the traditional ones like being a doctor and engineer.

"Sectors like aerospace, maritime, interior decorating or fashion designing also actually open up a broad employment opportunity with lucrative incomes," he added.
