KUALA LUMPUR: Puchong Member of Parliament Gobind Singh Deo has urged the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to break his silence and address the concerns raised about the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki.
He said that the MACC Act 2009 is clear in promoting integrity and accountability of the public and private sector administration and that Sabri’s silence reflects weaknesses on his part in dealing with the problem.
“Is the Prime Minister not committed to these objectives and if he is, how does silence over these allegations around the Chief Commissioner, the one responsible for the commission, measure up?”
“The Prime Minister cannot be quiet over a matter as significant as this. MACC comes under the eye of the Prime Ministers' department and he must take full responsibility for it.
“Silence reflects weakness on his part in dealing with the problem,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Gobind said Section 2 of the MACC Act 2009 states clearly that the principal objects of the Act are to promote the integrity and accountability of public and private sector administration by constituting an independent and accountable anti-corruption body which is the Commission.
He adds, Section 5 thereafter provides for the appointment of the Chief Commissioner who shall be responsible for the direction, control and supervision of all matters relating to the commission.
Last month, academician Professor Edmund Terence Gomez resigned from his role as MACC Consultative and Anti -Corruption Panel Member after he said the panel failed to discuss critical reports involving senior MACC officials.
Gomez, in his resignation letter to the panel Chairman Tan Sri Borhan Dolah, said questions arose over the 'relationship between businesses and authorities' and conflict of interest involving top leaders at the anti-graft agency.
Parti Pejuang Tanah Air Information Chief Ulya Aqamah Husamudin said Gomez’s letter was shocking and worrying and that Azam should be made to go on garden leave pending investigation.
