Terengganu and Kelantan are making preparations to face the annual year-end floods.

All schools located in flood-prone areas in Terengganu have been briefed on the procedures to adopt in facing the floods, said state director of education Zakaria Husin.

He said 27 schools were at risk of flooding or would be used as flood relief centres, particularly in the Besut, Setiu, Kemaman and Hulu Terengganu districts.

Schools at risk of flooding had been instructed to relocate files and other important documents to safe places, he told Bernama.

Zakaria said many schools were holding the year-end examinations and the returning of textbooks was expected to begin before the school holidays start on Nov 15.

In KELANTAN, a total of 581 personnel of the state fire and rescue department as well as 279 volunteer fire-fighters were ready to be mobilised in the event of floods.

The director of the department, Azmi Osman, said the department had distributed 58 boats to all the district fire stations.

"Thirty-one officers from the scuba unit and 21 from the Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) had undergone training," he told reporters at his office in Bandar Baharu Tunjong, Kota Baharu.

Azmi said the department had prepared 564 safety jackets, 88 utility vehicles, six jet skis and 16 scuba units for use in case of floods.

The department had identified several flood-prone locations in the districts of Jeli, Gua Musang, Rantau Panjang and Tumpat, he said.
