The government needs to set up more vision schools throughout the country although the move has been opposed by various quarters.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the government needs to continue its agenda for racial unity and ignore attempts to thwart the government's efforts to unite Malaysia's multi-racial community.
Mahdzir, who is also Energy, Green Technology and Water Deputy Minister, said through the vision schools, students of all races will share a canteen, field and hall, giving them the opportunity to foster closer ties with each other.
Mahdzir, who had been the principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Gadong, Beaufort, Sabah from 1990 to 1993, said lack of unity among the people would be detrimental to the nation as the people will go their own ways although they were all Malaysians.
"Sabah is the best when it comes to gathering students of all races in a school. All schools will have students who are Chinese, Indian and others and they will know each other better as Malaysian citizens," he told reporters when met at an Aidilfitri open house organised by the Padang Terap Umno in Padang Kerasak, here.
