KUALA LUMPUR: The use of digital technology and social media is deemed the most effective approach to disseminating information and holding arts and cultural programmes while the country is facing the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri hence called on the arts and culture activists to use these platforms in the best possible manner to revitalise the country's creative industry.
"The arts and culture activists and industry players must not give up, but to accept and adapt to the new norms in carrying out arts and cultural activities and for the industry to prevail."
She said this in her speech at the 2021 Arts Appreciation ceremony, which was broadcast live via the official Facebook page of the National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) here on Thursday.
Nancy said her ministry (MOTAC) and its agencies were reorganising various programmes and activities, with the implementation adjusted to the current situation.
Also present were MOTAC secretary-general, Datuk Dr Noor Zari Hamat and JKKN director-general, Mesran Mohd Yusop.
Nancy said that last year, JKKN successfully implemented 266 activities and programmes, with most of these held virtually and based on this, it was confident that the target of holding 279 programmes (virtually) this year could be achieved.
"In fact, based on statistics from the social media reports, JKKN's online programmes throughout 2020 received positive feedback from the public and arts and culture activists, with 4,020,792 viewers," she added.
Nancy said JKKN had meanwhile allocated RM300,000 this year, to be channelled to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to develop arts and cultural programmes in the country through the Seni-Kewangan incentive.
The offer of assistance will be made to the interested NGOs three times, at the end of this month (February) and in June and September.
