Several of the six criteria outlined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has been successfully implemented by Malaysia before the end of the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said one of the criteria met was reducing the incidence of COVID-19 as well as infectivity in the country has been very much under control.

"We have reduced the infectivity and admit positive patients (with mild or no symptoms) to the hospital for treatment.

"In addition to that, we have implemented the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) and targeted approaches in areas with high rates of infection to ensure there is no transmission of cases in the community," he said in a daily media conference here on Friday.

Dr Noor Hisham said another criterion carried out by the government to break the chain of infection was through the border control aspect.

"This criterion is really meant to ensure that the control of the borders is continually tightened as there were positive cases after their return from overseas.

"The third criterion is the access to health systems and the ability to detect infections including close contacts and conduct quarantine processes. This demonstrates the hospital's ability to treat COVID-19,” he said.

He said the fourth criterion in Malaysia's success in breaking the chain was by adopting new norms such as adhering to social distancing and regular hand washing by every individual.

"We also see the responsibility and cooperation of the community to control the spread of this outbreak and to take positive steps to protect the community, especially those at high risk," he said.
