Recreation activities such as swimming off the beaches and islands of Terengganu have been restricted during the current monsoon season.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the government had made an announcement earlier on the subject.
However, the directive was not followed, judging by the many drowning incidents, he said.
"The monsoon season is not suitable to carry out recreational activities such as swimming or bathing whether at waterfalls, lakes or beaches because it can be risky," he added.
Ahmad Razif was speaking to reporters after visiting the mother of Mohd Sukri Sulaiman, 45, who died in a boiler explosion in Abu Dhabi on Saturday morning, at her home in Kampung Padang Landak, Jerteh here Monday.
According to the Menteri Besar, instructions were issued on the closing of all recreation areas until March next year. However, the places continue to be visited, especially by local and foreign tourists.
Ahmad Razif was commenting on the drowning of a couple and their three daughters at the Belukar Bukit Waterfalls, Hulu Terengganu, on Saturday morning.
