UMNO information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan on Wednesday challenged the opposition to present an alternative to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), if they reject the GST implementation.
He said the GST is a tax system to ease the people's burden and not as alleged by the opposition in their campaigning in the Permatang Pauh and Rompin by-elections.
"If the GST implementation is rejected, I want to know what are the alternatives which the opposition can present to cushion the people's hardship and at the same time develop the country.
"The protest towards GST by the opposition is improper and will be troublesome to the people because the GST reduces tax to six per cent compared to 10 per cent in the Sales and Service Tax (SST) previously," he told Bernama in a exclusive interview before he attended a talk titled "Briefing on Current Issues" here on Wednesday.
"GST is a tax system that is better and more systematic compared to the SST used previously," he said.
"Barisan Nasional will continue to disseminate information and explanation on GST to the people. I am confident the GST is better than SST," he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad, who is also the Deputy Finance Minister, said he held a meeting with speakers for the by-elections campaign to give detailed information on GST in making sure they send the right information on it.
