Indian support is expected to increase in the upcoming Teluk Intan by-election due to various government programmes to assist the community, said MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said MIC was confident that 60 percent of the 11,468 Indian voters in the parliamentary constituency will vote for Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong in this Saturday's by-election.

In the 2013 General Election, only 45 percent of the Indian voters supported the BN, he told reporters after meeting more than 100 local MIC leaders here Monday.

"The sentiments of Indian voters are good. I feel he (Mah) stands a good chance to win," said Dr Subramaniam.

He said he believed that in choosing Mah, the Indian community's problems such as Tamil schools, temples and welfare will be looked into.

"If they (Indian community) want their issues to be solved, they need somebody who has connection with the Federal government. An opposition MP can only talk about problems but cannot solve them," he said.

Subramaniam said the Indian community should realise that the opposition MPs had failed to assist them in the last two terms, unlike the Federal government which has taken affirmative actions to improve the economy, education and job opportunities for the Indian community.
