MCA has voiced out its objection towards the proposed redelineation by the Election Commission (EC), stating that the exercise would leave a damaging effect to the party.

Its president, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the redelineation plan will likely cause MCA to lose out 26 of the 40 parliamentary seats that the party was set to contest in the 14th general election.

He said an estimated number of 1,000 to 10,000 voters who supported the party were involved in the redelineation exercise. One of the areas that will be affected is Petaling Jaya Utara.

"This redelineation plan that divides voters according to race gives a bad impression to the EC and to the government that adopts 'moderate' and 'inclusive' policies.

"This matter should be taken seriously and the proposal should refer to the diversity of our society," he said after chairing an MCA emergency committee meeting here on Tuesday.

Liow, who is also the Transport Minister, said MCA will form a committee at every party division to gain at least 100 signatures from its members to oppose the redelineation plan.

He also described the proposal as 'extreme' that may affect the performance of the party ahead of next general elections.

On Sept 14, the EC announced a plan to carry out a review of the redelineation of electoral boundaries for parliamentary and state seats in the peninsula and Sabah beginning Thursday.

EC secretary Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the review would be conducted based on the provisions of Clause (2) Article 113 of the Federal Constitution and amendments to Clause (2) Article 14 of the Sabah State Constitution, which was gazetted on Aug 18.

However, the EC has dismissed allegations that the redelineation of electoral boundaries in peninsular Malaysia and Sabah favoured certain quarters.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the EC discharged its duties and responsibilities as provided for in the Federal Constitution.
