Ahmad Affendy Manaff, identified by the Malaysian police as the second Malaysian suicide bomber who died in Syria was described by his family as a quiet person who spent time doing religious activities.

His uncle, Jaafar Chik, 67, said Ahmad Affendy attended pondok school in Pasir Puteh after completing his secondary school education and also joined the Tabligh group and had been to Thailand to carry out missionary works.

"The family is shocked to find out from the newspapers today (Tuesday)  that he was the individual who was reported killed.

"We don't even know that he went abroad and was involved in the so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group," he said when met at his house in Kampung Berangan here.

He said so far the family had not been approached by any quarters to inform them about Ahmad Affendy.

Attempts to locate Ahmad Affendy's parents, said to be operating a clothing business at a market here, were futile.

According to sources, Ahmad Affendy, who was single, had gone to Syria on April 23 to join the IS and was believed to have driven a bomb-laden truck into a military installation in Homs, Syria, killing a number of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad's soldiers.

The attack was made either on Nov 8 or 9.
