SAR operation for Tuaran boat tragedy suspended

The search and rescue (SAR) operation for two capsized boats in Sungai Serusup, Panimbawan here last night was suspended this afternoon.

Tuaran acting police chief, ASP Raji Hussin Suhodin said the decision to suspend the SAR operation at 1.32pm, was made after the police were satisfied that no more missing person report was lodged.

"Actually, we have no accurate information on the number of passengers on board the two boats.

"Nevertheless, we have discussed the matter and since no missing person report was lodged, we decided to suspend the operation," he told reporters here today.

He said the operation involving 60 personnel from the civil defence department, police, fire and rescue department and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency was mounted from 11 last night after the police received a report on the boat capsize.

The 10.30pm incident left six people drowned while 24 others were rescued.
