The body of Koi Kian Boon, 21, a college student, was found at 12.45pm yesterday, about 22 hours after he was reported missing while swimming near Cenang Beach here on Thursday.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Northern Region director, First Admiral Tan Kok Wee said the body was found washed ashore at Tengah Beach, about half a kilometre from where he was reported missing.
He said Koi went to the sea together with two of his friends at about 1.25pm Thursday but they encountered difficulties while swimming moments later.
Life guards at Cenang managed to save his two friends but failed to find Koi who was submerged under water.
Tan said two MMEA vessels were deployed to join the search and rescue operation but it was called off at 7.40pm Thursday night before resuming at 7.30am Friday.
Following the latest drowning incident, he said tourists and the local community should take precautionary measures when planning to go out to the sea during the current bad weather condition.
This is the third drowning case to occur in Langkawi within the last two weeks after a 17-year-old beach boy drowned after falling off from a jetski near Cenang Beach on July 28 and a 18-year-old youth died of similar circumstances at Tanjung Rhu beach.
