The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) wants authorities to refrain from using tear gas during its rally planned for the end of the month.

Its chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said, it would be inappropriate to use tear gas in a rally involving the public.

“They (the police) did not promise they would not use tear gas. Still I have raised the issue (tear gas).

“At least they (the police) know what they should not do,” she said after a meeting with Dang Wangi OCPD, ACP Zainol Samah at the Dang Wangi police station on Thursday.

She described the meeting as a positive development in ensuring the rally is carried out peacefully.

“They (police) listed down what they should and shouldn’t do (during the rally),” she said.

Commenting on the ban against the chanting of anti-government slogans during the rally, Maria Chin said, chanting is part of a rally.

“The police cannot stop it. We will be very disappointed if the police take action against the participants,” she said.

However, she is confident that the rally will run smoothly if it is permitted by the authorities.

“I’m confident with the cooperation from the police, the rally will run smoothly.

“We will launch the programme tomorrow and we will raise all issues apart from inviting NGOs to join this rally,” she said.

Bersih also called on the police to ensure the violence that occurred during the Bersih 3.0 rally does not recur this time around.

“Bersih does not want the incident that happened during the Bersih 3.0 rally to recur. This matter had been raised with them (during the meeting),” she said.

On Wednesday, Bersih had received a letter of notification asking for its chairperson to meet with the Dang Wangi police chief.

During the meeting, Bersih was also given a copy of a notice required under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 to be filled up and returned to the Dang Wangi police chief.

Bersih will hand over the notice together with other necessary documents on Friday or next Monday.

Maria Chin had previously said she was ready to hold talks with the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar on security issue during the proposed ‘Pesta Demokrasi Bersih 4’ which is scheduled to be held on August 29 and 30.

She said it was important to ensure the safety of participants and to control the traffic flow in the city on that day.
