PKR has confirmed that its de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be running for the party's presidency post in the upcoming party polls.
The move, which has been speculated for months, is believed to finally give Anwar an official position in the party.
PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail told The Malaysian Insider that the Pakatan Rakyat supreme leader will contest the post currently held by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail.
"Yes, Anwar will run for that post," Saifuddin was quoted as saying in the report.
Anwar, in an interview with another news portal, had hinted at the move, saying that his wife had told him that she wanted to rest and spend more time with their grandchildren rather than be involved in politics.
Earlier, there was also speculation that the party's deputy president Mohamad Azmin Ali would contest the post against Wan Azizah.
However, political observers now predict that with Anwar running for the No.1 post, Azmin will likely be settling for the deputy seat again.
Previously, PKR Election Committee chairman Datuk Johari Abdul had announced that the nomination day for the central committee would be on March 29.
At the branch level, nominations will be held according to zones, beginning from Apr 4 to 13. The full results of the new line-up of PKR leadership will be revealed at the latest on May 13 after the nationwide voting ends on May 11,
Voting, said Johari, would go on for three weeks – from Apr 25 to May 11.
