So far this year, 162 food consignments have been prohibited from entering the Malaysian market due to the safety factor following monitoring by the Health Ministry.
Its deputy minister, Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said 140,234 food consignments worth about RM18 billion imported into the country were monitored during the period.
"Overall, the rate of violation of the regulations involving food products sold in the market in the past decade did not show a significant increase, that is, 4.76 percent," he said after opening the Safe Food Expo, here, today.
About 100 food industry operators are participating in the two-day expo from today to promote their products, besides creating awareness among the visitors on food safety.
Dr Hilmi also said that 1,152 food product manufacturers in the small and medium industry (SMI) category had attained food safety recognition up to last month, through the 'Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI) certification since it was introduced last year.
"The MeSTI certification is a step forward for the SMI operators to improve their food safety system towards meeting the international standards, hence making SMIs more competitive to penetrate the global market," he said.
