As General Election (GE13) fever grips Malaysians here, many will meet at a luxury hotel here on Sunday night, May 5, to watch the results on a big screen.
It is being organised by a group of Malaysian Lasallians headed by lawyer Chuen Lim and restaurateur Robert Teoh, of Chillipadi fame.
It will be held at Malaysian-owned Seasons Hotel, 348 St Kilda Road, opposite the Shrine of Remembrance, starting at 7pm. Entry is A$10 a person with Malaysian finger food included.
Malaysian food will be available at the hotel's exquisite Orient East restaurant.
It is open to all Malaysians but reservation is essential.
"So far about 50 have booked to come, but we expect many more by Saturday," said Lim, formerly of Teluk Intan.
"We expect a lively and exciting night as the results are flashed on the screen."
He said it was encouraging to see more than 1,000 Malaysians who registered as overseas voters casting their ballots on Sunday at the Malaysian Consulate, also in St Kilda Road.
Lim said the idea of an election eve get-together came up when a group of Lasallians had lunch at Orient East about three weeks ago.
"We felt it would be a wonderful opportunity for us to meet on the historic occasion and share our thoughts and predictions," he said.
